The Miami Hurricanes rolled to a 69-0 win over FCS foe Central Connecticut State on Saturday.
Miami’s QB Situation
After last Saturday’s injury against Michigan State, starting QB D’Eriq King was ruled out Saturday against CCSU. So, Head Coach Manny Diaz turned to his two backups, redshirt freshman Tyler Van Dyke and true freshman Jake Garcia. To say the least, neither one disappointed.
Tyler Van Dyke had an incredible 387.1 passer rating, as he went 10-of-11 passing with 270 yards and three touchdowns. On his first drive, Van Dyke threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Mike Harley. A little over a minute later, he would complete a 75-yard touchdown pass to Brashard Smith. Smith would be the leading receiver for Miami, hauling in five receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown.
True freshman QB Jake Garcia got some playing time towards the end of the game. Garcia went 11-of-14 passing with 147 yards and two touchdowns. Garcia also had 45 rushing yards.
Rest of the Offense
Cam’Ron Harris would do it all for Miami on Saturday. The junior would have 10 rushes for 100 yards with two touchdowns. Harris also had an 83-yard touchdown reception. Meanwhile, freshman running-backs Cody Brown and Thaddeus Franklin had a combined 165 yards and three touchdowns on 21 rushes.
In the end, Miami would have a school record of 739 total yards. However, Central Connecticut State only had a total of 198 yards, with 169 of those passing.
After the game, Head Coach Manny Diaz said the following: “There’s a good feeling not just because of the victory, not because of the score, not because of the opponent. It’s because all of the things we emphasized in practice, the things we ask them to do with the energy on the sideline or their enthusiasm for their teammates and for eachother. We were excited to play today and that means we’re on the right path and our leadership is in the right spot. And like I said, our young guys are coming along and are going to continue to contribute to this football team.”
