On a gloomy Sunday outside LoanDepot Park, it was anything but that inside.
The Miami Marlins, thanks to clutch pitching and timely hitting, took the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates three wins to one. The Marlins finished the home stand strong with four wins and three losses in their seven games in Miami.
Recap
In the bottom of the third inning, Center Fielder Jonathan Davis launched a solo home run to deep left field to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Marlins rallied together a few base runners with Yuli Gurriel stepping up to the plate. With a quality at-bat, Gurriel smacked a ground ball that deflected off Pirates pitcher Mlodzinski that scored Bryan De La Cruz. This run propelled Miami to a 2-0 lead going into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Marlins closer AJ Puk looked for redemption as his last outing resulted in a blown save. However, this game he was SHARP and recorded three straight outs to win the Marlins the ball game.
The biggest story of this game was Marlins rookie sensation Eury Perez. Perez pitched a VERY STRONG six innings, allowing only four hits and recording nine strikeouts along the way and no runs allowed. Perez has now extended his scoreless inning streak to 21 innings straight. Without a doubt, it’s a very impressive mark by the Miami rookie.
