Marlins Call Up Top Prospect Max Meyer

The Miami Marlins are calling up right-handed pitcher Max Meyer, their second-ranked prospect (ranked 21st in MLB top 100). The former third overall pick has quickly made his way up the minors since being drafted in 2020.

Meyer is another tremendous young arm that the Marlins will add to their rotation. Meyer brings two plus pitches to the big leagues, including a fastball that sits 92 to 95 mph. To go along with his fastball, Meyer possesses a devastating slider that had scouts in complete awe while he was at the University of Minnesota.

Mason McRae, a writer for prospect365.com, called Meyer a unicorn of a prospect. He had this to say on Meyers slider.

“Thrown at 89.8 mph on average, Meyer’s slider could go head-to-head with just about any pitch from any amateur pitching prospect I’ve seen. As is true with most of the right-hander’s profile, the pitch perfectly fits the current trajectory of Major League Baseball; its minimal vertical movement paired with a slight horizontal break make it more of a cutter than a slider at times. He gets an elite raw spin on the pitch (2756 RPM), which directly correlates to his elite swing-and-miss numbers (47.0%) when throwing the pitch.”

Many teams were worried about Meyer’s height and body mass, but the Marlins believed he has star potential. He has done nothing but impress in the minor leagues with an ERA of 3.78 in 58 innings pitched at the AAA. His ERA may not impress you, but he has a WHIP of 0.96 and 69 strikeouts in 58 innings, which shows his dominance.

It seems like the Marlins have called up plenty of top prospects including Edward Cabrera, who in his first two starts pitched 12 innings and only gave up one run, or Braxton Garrett, who just dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates with 11 strikeouts in six innings.

Now it’s Meyer’s turn, who is the most talented pitcher the Marlins have had since Jose Fernandez. He will make his debut Saturday, with all of Miami watching.
