Marlins Secure First Win of Series, Defeat Pirates 5-4 in Extras

The Miami Marlins and the Pittsburgh Pirates played the third game of four on a rain-filled Wednesday night at loanDepot Park. Luckily, with the closed roof in Miami, the game was played with no delays.

Game three of four went to the Marlins in extra innings fashion. The game was filled with ups and downs, but the Fish pulled it out, and that’s all that matters.

Recap

The first four innings were very silent for both teams with no runs and minimal hits. Then in the fifth, the Pirates got the scoring party going with O’Neil Cruz scoring on a Ben Gamel single to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

The Marlins took the lead in the bottom of the 8th after Avisail Garcia drove in two runs on a line drive to center field, scoring Jon Berti and pinch-runner Billy Hamilton.

After tying it in the ninth, the Pirates scored two more in the 10th on RBI’s from Vogelbach and Hayes on two consecutive ground balls.

The Marlins trailed by two entering the bottom half of the 10th inning and wound up scoring three runs in spectacular fashion, including a game-winning walk-off wild pitch to end the ball game. It was Jesus Aguilar who came across the plate to score.

Pablo Lopez was strong for the Fish. He allowed only one run and one hit over five innings, gathering three strikeouts along the way. Lopez struggled with his command, though, allowing four walks in his outing.

On the flip side, JT Brubaker was phenomenal for the Pirates. Brubaker pitched seven strong innings, allowing only three hits and no runs to go along with nine strikeouts in his mound performance. Pirates closer David Bednar had arguably his worst outing of the season, giving up three runs including the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
