Reviewing Florida and Miami’s Final March Madness Resumes Ahead of Selection Sunday

As the old saying goes, “Let the Madness begin!” With the remaining five automatic NCAA tournament bids being handed out today, the field of 68 teams in the 2022 NCAA tournament will be finalized on CBS at 6 P.M eastern time. For the teams that didn’t win their conference tournament, their NCAA tournament fate will be in the hands of the selection committee. In order to be selected, these ‘at-large’ teams’ season-long resumes need to hope that their resume is impressive enough to be placed in the tournament. For Florida and Miami, this is certainly the case, as both programs were unable to win their conference tournaments and will be in the conversation for an at-large bid. So with the committee set to make their picks in hours, here are the Gators’ and Hurricanes’ updated march madness resumes.

Cumulative Record: 19-13, 9-9 SEC

Quad Records: 3-10 Quad One, 4-2 Quad Two, 5-0 Quad Three, 7-1 Quad Four

Quality Win-Loss Record: 4-9

NET Ranking: 59

Kempom Ranking: 55

Basketball Power Index (BPI) Rating: 42

Major Wins: 71-55 W vs #20 Florida State, 71-68 W @ Ohio State, 81-72 W vs Oklahoma State, 63-62 W vs #2 Auburn

Major Losses: 67-74 L @ Oklahoma, 54-69 L vs Texas Southern, 71-78 L @ #18 Tennesse, 55-56 L @ Texas A&M, 74-82 L vs #18 Arkansas, 63-71 L vs #7 Kentucky

SEC Tournament Result: 83-80 OT L vs No. 8 Seed Texas A&M

Tournament Outlook: While Florida’s team metrics aren’t bad at first glance, they desperately needed to win multiple quality games in the SEC Tournament, but were upset by Texas A&M in the first round. If Florida ended up winning that game, then they would have had a chance to play No. 1 Seed Auburn, whom they beat earlier in the regular season. This would’ve likely solidified the Gators as one of the “Last Four In” teams, but instead find themselves on the outside looking in. If Florida doesn’t make the tournament, then it may mark the end of the Mike White Coaching era in Gainesville. Despite posting a 142-88 record and leading the Gators to four NCAA tournaments in six years, reports have come out that White is reportedly “on the hot seat” and may be relieved of his coaching duties.

ACC Tournament Result(s): 71-69 OT W vs No. 13 Boston College, 76-80 L vs No. 1 Duke

Tournament Outlook: Unlike the Gators, the Hurricanes have solidified their place in the NCAA Tournament. The real question for Miami is what seed they’ll earn. As previously noted, Miami had some impressive regular-season victories, including a 76-74 upset win over Duke and an 85-57 victory over North Carolina. The Hurricanes have also had some questionable losses that are weighing their resume down, including a six-point defeat to UCF and a head-scratching 16-point blowout loss to Dayton. Fortunately for Miami, neither of these losses qualify as a Quad Four loss, which would have seriously damaged their resume like Florida’s loss to Texas Southern has to the Gators’ resume. According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, Miami is projected to make the field as a No. 11 seed as one of the tournament’s “Last Four Byes”.
