The Tampa Bay Lightning lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. Tampa Bay is now on a two game losing streak with a record of 2-2-1. Meanwhile, the Avalanche won their second game of the season to improve to 2-3-0.

The Lightning practically began the game on the penalty kill as thirty-six seconds in, Ondrej Palat was in the box. On top of this at 3:46 into the first, Mikhail Sergachev also took a penalty. Colorado was not able to take advantage of either power plays. Although the Avs could not capitalize, they scored shortly after with a Gabriel Landeskog goal. Two more Colorado penalties wrapped up the period, but the Lightning could not tally any goals.
Once again, Tampa Bay opened the period with a penalty. Despite being down to start the period, the Bolts killed it off. Later, Mathieu Joseph scored the Lightning’s first goal to tie the game at one. Soon after the game-tying goal, Victor Hedman took a penalty. This was costly to Tampa Bay, as Mikko Rantanen scored a goal to make the game 2-1 Colorado. Once again, another few penalties rounded out the period, including a pair of roughing penalties.
Steven Stamkos opened the final period with a goal about four minutes in to tie the game at two. In a rare occurrence, Andrei Vasilevskiy received a tripping penalty. Five seconds into the power play, Colorado tallied their third of the night to take the lead once again. With less than three minutes left, however, Brayden Point tied the game at three to send it to overtime.
The game did not end in overtime as the Avalanche outshot the Lightning five to one. Instead, the winner of the game was to be decided in a shootout. It was Hedman and Rantanen who scored in the first three rounds to send the shootout to sudden death. Stamkos and Landeskog each scored in round four to prolong the shootout. It was Cale Makar in the sixth round that won the Avalanche the game.
