The Miami Hurricanes beat the North Carolina State Wolfpack 31-30 at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke had some strong words for the Wolfpack defense recently, and he backed those comments up with his performance. Just when the season seemed to be out of hope for Miami, the Hurricanes get a signature win over a ranked team. Check out a recap of Miami’s big win over NC State.
Recap
Offense
The Hurricanes’ offense was impressive today, and it all starts with the right arm of Van Dyke. He threw for 325 yards and four touchdowns, which are great numbers against a stout Wolfpack defense. Although D’Eriq King has the experience, Van Dyke has the poise and talent.
Wide receiver Charleston Rambo also had a big day with nearly 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns; the Oklahoma transfer proved his worth, and he’s clearly lethal in open space. Miami has to find and hold on to more recruits like these in Southern Florida.
Running back Jaylan Knighton had around four yards per carry, and he was also a factor in the passing game with 83 receiving yards and two touchdowns. If Miami’s offensive line can win the line of scrimmage battle, Knighton can be more productive in his coming performances. Overall, Miami’s offense finally had some balance: a great sign.
Defense
Honestly, NC State’s offense looked competent with the ACC’s best in this game. Quarterback Devin Leary finished with 310 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown. Everyone knew he was a great game-manager after the win over Clemson, but he proved that he has the potential to play at the next level. Miami even limited the Wolfpack’s best receiving threat in tight end Emeka Emezie to 75 receiving yards.
The Hurricanes did allow 110 rushing yards, but that amount holds less weight if you take out Trent Pennix’s one carry for 40 yards. All in all, the difference in the game is that Miami’s defense made the necessary plays when they were required. Still, you got to tip your cap to both offenses. NC State still has a chance to make a run for the ACC title.
Concluding Thoughts
There’s a lot to improve on from this game for the Hurricanes, but Miami should be proud of beating a great NC State team. Next week, the Hurricanes will face another ranked team in Pittsburgh, who just came off a big win against Clemson. If Miami can post a similar effort in that game, the Hurricanes can make a great run towards the end of the season. Head Coach Manny Diaz still has the power to turn it all around.
