Braves Offense Has Big Night, Marlins Lose 12-2

On a rainy evening in Miami, the Atlanta Braves traveled in from Washington D.C. to take on the Miami Marlins for the first game of a three-game set. All-around team offense and a quality pitching start by Touki Toussaint was the key to success as the Braves outplayed the Marlins. The Braves advance to 63-56 and the Marlins now sit at 51-68.

Recap

The Marlins sprung out to a hot start by scoring two runs in the first two innings. Shortstop Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a leadoff home run in the first inning. And in the second inning, second baseman Isan Diaz hit a bomb to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead.

Unfortunately for the Fish, the Braves retaliated in a huge way as they scored seven runs in the top of the 4th inning. All-Star Freddie Freeman and Ex-Marlin Adam Duvall hit home runs, on top of RBI’s from Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson. Freeman and Albies were the run makers for the Braves as they combined for six hits in nine at bats, and totaled half of the runs driven in by Atlanta with three runs batted in each.

Marlins starter Braxton Garrett struggled on the mound. He could not find his groove from the start of the game and totaled a season-high six walks in three innings pitched. Garrett also gave up three runs. However, the biggest story of the game came from the Marlins bullpen, allowing nine earned runs in just four innings.

The Braves have now won 11 out of their last 13 games. Atlanta also sits one-and-a-half games ahead of the Phillies for first place in the NL East.
