Marlins Fall To Phillies 7-4

The Miami Marlins were dealt several tough blows throughout Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins firmly remain in last place after losing three out of four games in their trip to Philadelphia. Miami’s 40-53 record sits them 10 games behind the first-place New York Mets and 13 games under .500.

Pitching

The Marlins elected to start left-hander Braxton Garrett on Sunday. The 2016 first-round pick had a rough outing, giving up two runs on seven total hits. Garrett gave up an RBI single to J.T. Realmuto and a 5th inning home run to Andrew McCutchen. The Marlins introduced a series of relief pitchers throughout the game, with a total of five pitchers taking the mound. Aside from Steven Okert, each pitcher allowed at least one earned run.

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler earned his 7th win of the season this Sunday afternoon. Despite the win, Wheeler gave up four runs in six innings while allowing a total of six hits. After Wheeler was pulled, relief pitchers Bailey Falter, Conor Brogdon and Hector Neris did not allow a single run. Throughout the final three innings, the Phillies only gave up three total hits.

Plate Production

Although the Marlins failed to tally a victory, they showed prowess at the plate. The fifth-place Marlins welcomed RBI’s from Adam Duvall, Starling Marte and Garrett Cooper. Right fielder Adam Duvall drove in two runs while tallying two hits in three plate appearances. The Marlins totaled nine hits, just one shy of the Phillies total of 10.
