Cardinals Win In Fashion Over Miami Marlins

On Wednesday afternoon, the Miami Marlins lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in what was a long pitching duel. Even with a phenomenal start by Miami’s Sandy Alcantara, the Marlins couldn’t find a way to tack up a run. However, Yadier Molina of the Cardinals was able to do just that in walk-off fashion, hitting a game-winning RBI single. It was Molina’s eighth career regular season walk-off hit, giving Miami its fourth straight loss.

Game Recap

As the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals got underway, it was easy to notice the caliber of pitching each team had. Miami started Sandy Alcantara who held a 4-5 record before Wednesday’s game. On the other side, St. Louis started right-hander Johan Oviedo who held an 0-2 record.

Sandy Alcantara went a season-high eight innings in Wednesday’s loss, striking out seven batters while only giving up one run on six hits. Meanwhile, Oviedo of the Cardinals made it seven shutout innings before being replaced by left-hander Andrew Miller. Miller was only able to achieve one strikeout and walk before he was taken out of the game. After this move by Mike Shildt, St. Louis decided to bring in Ryan Helsley to finish the game.

Throughout the Cardinals win, both teams had only posted six hits apiece while the Marlins had three errors. From the Marlins, third basemen Jon Berti held two of these six hits while four additional players clenched the others. These hits all came at great times to start a run, but the baseball Gods said otherwise. The Cardinals were backed by centerfielder Dylan Carlson’s two hits, and Yadier Molina’s walk-off single that allowed for the win.
