Matt Wisler Acquired by Tampa Bay

The San Francisco Giants have traded righty Matt Wisler to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor league left-hander Michael Plassmeyer.

Matt Wisler

Matt Wisler, 28, was drafted by the San Diego Padres out of high school in the seventh round of the 2011 MLB draft. Wisler then made his MLB debut in 2015 as part of the Padres. Since his time in San Diego, Wisler has played on the Braves, Reds, Mariners, Twins, and Giants. Now, the 28-year-old is playing for Tampa Bay.

Wisler was designated for assignment earlier in the week. In 19 1/3 innings with the Giants this season, the righty has been tagged for a 6.05 earned run average. However, Wisler had a stellar season with Minnesota in 2020, when he pitched to a 1.07 ERA with a 32.7 percent strikeout rate in 25 1/3 innings.

Michael Plassmeyer, 24, was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2018 draft. He was then traded to Tampa Bay that same year in a five-player deal involving Mike Zunino and Mallex Smith.

The 24-year-old isn’t an overpowering arm, but he’s walked just 4.6 percent of the hitters he’s faced in pro ball. Plassmeyer owns a 3.64 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 33 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings in Double-A this season.
