Garrett Cooper Hits Walk-Off Home Run Against New York

In what turned out to be a fantastic game Saturday, Garrett Cooper hit a walk-off home run for Miami, lifting the Marlins over the Mets.

Recap

Joey Lucchesi got the nod for the Mets, while Pablo López took the mound for Miami. Lucchesi had arguably his best career start, pitching a season-high four innings on just 43 pitches. In his four innings of work, Lucchesi allowed only one hit and struck out eight batters.

Like Lucchesi, Pablo López had a tremendous game. López allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings and struck out eight. However, both pitcher’s performances weren’t enough as both teams had no offense.

Finally, in the seventh inning with runners on the corners and one out, pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson flew out to left and Maybin’s throw home was a good one, but popped out of Nido’s glove to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

In the eighth inning, New York finally got on the board. Dominic Smith singled to right to bring home Jose Peraza, tying the game at one apiece.

Fast-forwarding to the ninth inning, Drew Smith came in to try to force extra innings. Smith retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth with the help of an outrageous catch from Johneshwy Fargas. However, Brian Anderson singled to keep the inning alive. And then with a full count, Garrett Cooper hit a two-run walk-off home run on a 90-mph cutter down the middle. Cooper totaled three hits on the day, homering for the third game in a row, increasing his season total to five.
