Sandy Alcantara and Garrett Cooper Lift Marlins Over Phillies

Sandy Alcantara bounced back from what was arguably the worst start of his career last week, pitching six shutout innings to lift the Miami Marlins over the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-0.

Recap

Garrett Cooper

Garrett Cooper was the star of the game for Miami, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an RBI triple. Cooper also had a double, however, the scoring officials ruled it an error.

Sandy Alcantara

Heading into Thursday’s game against the Phillies, Sandy Alcantara was coming off arguably the worst start of his career. Against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Alcantara recorded just four outs and surrendered a career-high eight earned runs in a 9-6 loss at Dodger Stadium. It was also the shortest start of his career.

But on Thursday night, Alcantara showed his true colors. The 25-year-old pitched six innings, giving up only two hits and no runs with nine strikeouts. Alcantara also produced at the plate, hitting a double in the fifth inning.

Miguel Rojas

Miguel Rojas, who was leading off for the Marlins, hit a 399 ft solo home run in the third inning. Rojas totaled two hits on the night.

Phillies Pitching

Phillies starter Vince Velasquez was a late scratch because of a numb right index finger, forcing Philadelphia into a bullpen game. As a result, David Hale got the start for Philadelphia. Hale pitched three innings, giving up two hits and one run. Matt Moore also pitched for Philly. Moore, 31, pitched two innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Archie Bradley also pitched, allowing three runs in 1 2/3 innings.
