Ohio State QB Justin Fields has been having a fantastic Junior year, and is a projected top 3 pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. The Jacksonville Jaguars currently hold the 2nd pick, where Justin Fields will likely be available at. Is he the obvious choice for the Jaguars?
Overview
Fields had a great Sophomore campaign, where he threw for 3,273 yards 41 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He added 484 yards rushing and 10 rushing touchdowns. This year in four games he has been terrific, throwing for 1,208 yards, 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. All 3 interceptions came in one game, where he struggled a bit. The Buckeyes were still able to hold on and move to 4-0. This season he has the 2nd highest QBR in college football. In doing all of this, he made himself a top 2 QB in this draft class, and likely a top 3 selection in the draft.
Jaguars QB Situation
Right now, the Jaguars QB situation is bad, and that’s putting it lightly. Gardner Minshew II showed promising signs last year and at the beginning of this season, but things went downhill from there. Minshew struggled to the point where benching him was discussed. It never amounted to anything, but he got injured a few games later and 6th round rookie Jake Luton had to start. Luton had a solid first start, before playing awful in the next 2 games. He has also been benched, and Mike Glennon is now the starter. Fields could bring talent and a real franchise QB to the Jags, if they take him.
Should they take him?
Right now, it seems none of the Jaguars QB’s are even close to franchise QB material, and with a prospect like Fields, it seems inevitable they will draft a QB. Fields’ possesses the skill, IQ, and leadership to be a star at the next level. He’s got a great arm, is accurate on deep shots, and is dangerous running the ball too. He would already have a great receiver in DJ Chark Jr. and an up and coming rookie in Laviska Shenault. The Jaguars will likely select a QB when they are on the clock in April, and right now it seems very probable that QB will be Justin Fields.
