Victor Hedman has experienced a tough loss before the start of a new season. His beloved bulldog, Harry Hedman, passed away. He was 14 years old.
The 34-year-old defenseman isn’t the most social media-active player in the NHL, but he liked sharing Harry’s headshots. After all, Harry was an essential part of a local community, helped raise money for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and inspired his owner to create last year’s special Victor Hedman merchandise collection featuring an image of a French bulldog in a Lightning jersey next to a letter “C” (for captain). The line was available online and at the team’s store. The portion of all sales was donated to the HSTB.
In February, Hedman attended a Meet & Greet session with fans organized by Florida Blue and didn’t forget his mission. There was also a donation collection spot for anyone who wished to bring various pet toys, treats, pads, collars, and cleaning supplies.
So, besides being the first Lightning defenseman to play over 1000 NHL games, Hedman has a big heart. In 16 seasons with the organization, he recorded 794 points (171 goals).
To honor Harry’s memory, the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation donated $7,700 to the Humane Society of Tampa.
As for the upcoming season, the veteran blueliner missed the last four preseason games after sustaining an injury against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sept. 26. The details are unknown.
The Lightning have their home opener against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Best wishes to all hockey and pet lovers.
