Can Florida’s MLB Teams Thrive in 2026?

It is every Florida MLB baseball fan’s favorite time of the year. Forget the playoffs and the World Series, Opening Day is the most magical. It doesn’t matter whether your team hasn’t made the postseason for decades.  Or you’ve lost your best players to your divisional rivals, Opening Day is when anything can happen.

Florida has celebrated championships in sports such as soccer and hockey in the very recent past. However, it has been a while since Florida baseball fans have excelled at America’s pastime. There won’t be many of the top sports betting sites backing the Miami Marlins or Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series in 2026. Let’s take a look at the makeup of these teams and determine what they can do.

In this article, we will look at the relative strengths and weaknesses of both teams and suggest some realistic goals. Anything can happen at this time of year, but what might we expect by the time the Fall comes around?

Recent Miami Marlins & Tampa Bay Rays History

The Marlins finished third in the NL East last year, but fell short in making the postseason. The Wild Card loss to the Phillies in 2023 is still the last time Miami tasted the postseason. They have only made two trips past the regular season since the World Series triumph in 2003.

The Rays have a better recent history when it comes to the playoffs, although they have not won a single game since 2021. Two Wild Card sweeps at the hands of the Rangers and Guardians, three and four years ago, respectively, are the recent memories for Tampa fans. Their most recent AL East title came five years ago, with little in the way of contention since.

Postseason Florida MLB Goals

The Rays are widely viewed as the more likely of Florida’s two teams to reach the postseason this year.

We don’t have to go back too far for a winning season, and there were three teams from the AL East who made the playoffs last time out. Sneaking into a Wild Card berth may not be beyond this team.

The Marlins will also be buoyed by that third-place finish last year, but it might actually give fans some false hope of making the playoffs in 2026. The goal will be to do a little bit better and claim a Wild Card spot of their own, but the competition is fierce in the NL, so any slumps throughout the season could derail those hopes.

Miami Marlins Strengths and Weaknesses

Although the offseason trades of Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers will undoubtedly hurt the Marlins, the return of Sandy Alcantara and Eúry Perez from injury will really boost the rotation this year. Add Max Meyer to the list, and there is some real pitching strength on the roster. With the addition of former Ray Pete Fairbanks, the bullpen has also been upgraded to boost Miami from the mound.

Although the young Marlins outfield offers a relatively strong defense, there will be concerns about its inexperience. That could really be a problem if the offense is not able to get going as hoped. That being said, if everything clicks and Miami is able to produce some more breakout stars, it could be a good year.

Rays Strengths and Weaknesses

Returning to Tropicana Field after a year away should give the Rays a lift in 2026. Unfortunately, there will be some concern about the depth of the lineup.

At the top of the order, the Rays boast a potent trio in Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda, and Junior Caminero, who are each capable of getting runs on the board. But the lineup tails off dramatically after those three.

If the main hitters aren’t performing, the Rays could have a real problem and will have to rely on the weaker members of the roster stepping up. Shane McClanahan’s return is a welcome plus for the rotation, but a lot will depend on how long he can last. As with the Marlins, the Rays could click and do well, but also fall quite dramatically.

Divisional Issues

Regardless of how well the Rays and Marlins perform, their postseason hopes may ultimately hinge on the strength of their divisions. The Marlins have to contend with the Mets, Phillies, and Braves. Only the Nationals look weaker than them on paper.

The Rays would seem to have things even harder when it comes to divisional rivals. The Yankees and Blue Jays are two teams expected to do well this year, if not go all the way, while both the Orioles and Red Sox will also have postseason aspirations. Battling past any of those teams will be an achievement in itself.

Realistic 2026 MLB Hopes

Although Tampa is probably the stronger of the two Florida teams going into the 2026 Major League Baseball season, it may be a more realistic hope to see the Marlins take one of the Wild Card spots. Out of all of the teams towards the bottom of the pre-season power rankings, it is Miami that is considered to have the ability to break through.

Tampa might very well win more games than Miami this year, but the AL East is stacked. A lot of the Rays’ potential success hinges on some very hit-or-miss factors. The unpredictability of the team might well end up being its downfall.

Not many baseball fans expect to see a Florida team in the World Series this year. But with some fortune behind them, making the playoffs is realistic.
