Why the Orlando Magic Should Re-sign Tyler Harvey

The Orlando Magic are currently facing challenges with their point guard depth, a situation that could be addressed by re-signing Tyler Harvey, their former second-round pick from the 2015 NBA Draft.

Harvey, who led the NCAA in scoring during his junior year at Eastern Washington, was initially selected by the Magic for his exceptional offensive skills. Although he didn’t secure a long-term spot with Orlando at that time, his subsequent professional journey has been impressive.

After his tenure with the Magic, Harvey showcased his talents in various international leagues, most notably in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL). He earned All-NBL First Team honors twice and played a pivotal role in leading his team to an NBL championship in 2025. In March 2025, Harvey signed with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), further expanding his international experience.

Harvey’s performance in the CBA playoffs has been nothing short of spectacular. In Game 2 of the quarterfinals, he hit a dramatic game-winning buzzer-beater to force a decisive Game 3 against the defending champions. He finished the night with 34 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, showcasing his ability to both score and facilitate under pressure. That kind of clutch performance proves Harvey is more than just a scorer — he’s a poised, high-IQ player who can deliver when it matters most.

The Magic’s current roster reveals a pressing need for depth at the point guard position. The recent signing of veteran guard Cory Joseph, while adding experience, may not suffice given the team’s aspirations and the demands of the NBA season. Additionally, the Magic have been exploring options to bolster their backcourt, indicating an awareness of this gap.

Re-signing Tyler Harvey could address this need effectively. His proven scoring ability, combined with the maturity and experience gained from international play, positions him as a valuable asset. Harvey’s familiarity with the Magic organization and his demonstrated resilience and growth since his initial stint make him a compelling candidate to enhance Orlando’s point guard rotation.

Bringing Harvey back to the Magic could provide the team with the necessary depth and offensive prowess at the point guard position to help them make some noise in the playoffs.
