Shortly after finishing the 2021-2022 regular season with a 125-111 victory over the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic have wasted no time making changes to their roster. According to Orlando’s President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman, the Magic have signed PG Devin Cannady to a multi-year contract extension. Cannady originally signed a 10-day deal with Orlando on April 6, 2021, before signing a two-way contract 10 days later. In five games with Orlando this season, Cannady averaged 10.0 PPG, 1.2 RPG, and 2.0 APG while shooting 34.1% from the field and 40.5% from three-point range. In Orlando’s regular-season finale, Cannady played a big role in the 14-point win, notching a season-high 15 points and hitting four three-pointers in 33 minutes. Cannady’s five-game stint couldn’t have been much better, as he scored at least nine points and made at least three three-pointers in all but one game.
Prior to joining the Magic, Cannady was part of Orlando’s G-Leauge Affiliate, the Lakeland Magic. Cannady found much offensive success for the Lakeland Magic, averaging 15.8 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 2.0 APG while shooting 46.0% from the field and 45.9% from downtown. Cannady’s stellar shooting propelled the Lakeland Magic to a 9-6 record and the 2021 NBA G-League Championship Title, where he was named the MVP behind a 22-point, six-rebound, and four-assist game. Cannady also found success in college at Princeton, where he averaged 14.6 PPG., 4.1 RPG, 1.6 APG, and 1.1 SPG while shooting 44.1% from the field and 40.3% from three-point range. To this day, Cannady still holds Princeton’s all-time free-throw percentage, at 89.6% (285-318). Over his four years (2015-2019) as a Tiger, Cannady was named to the Second Team All-Ivy League (2017-18) and as an Honorable Mention All-Ivy League (2016-17).
