Charlie Moore Bangs Home a Shot on the Road, Canes Beat Hokies 78-75

The Miami Hurricanes came back in a huge way on Wednesday night, traveling to Blacksburg, VA and shocking the Virginia Tech Hokies on a Charlie Moore buzzer-beater, 78-75. With their win, Miami improves to 15-5 (7-2 in the ACC). Also, with the Florida State Seminoles loss, the Miami Hurricanes jump right back into first place in the ACC. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech drops to 10-10 (2-7 in the ACC).

Game Recap:

All five starting players for the Hurricanes scored in double-figures. Kameron McGusty led the way scoring-wise with 19 points, while Jordan Miller had 18 points, going seven-of-nine from the field with seven rebounds. Charlie Moore had 13 points, including the game-winning half-court shot. Sam Waardenburg and Isaiah Wong each had 12 points, with Waardenburg going a perfect four-of-four on three-pointers.

Keve Aluma led the Hokies in scoring with 14 points. Darion Maddox, Hunter Cattoor, and Nahiem Alleyne each had 13 points for the Hokies. Justyn Mutts nearly had a triple-double, with nine points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.

The early part of the first half was all Miami, as they started the game out on a 20-9 run. Virginia Tech would come back with a run of their own, bringing the game back to a 26-24 game with 4:42 left in the first half. Ultimately, the Hurricanes would never give up the lead, staying up 36-31 at the half.

The Hokies would take their first lead of the game with a little over 10 minutes left in the game, and a few minutes later, all seemed lost when they went up 75-70 with a little over two minutes left. But the Hurricanes rolled back on an 8-0 run. Miller made a driving layup but missed the and-1 free throw before Wong was fouled on a 3-point shot and hit three free throws to tie it with 1:09 remaining. With 1.5 seconds left, Charlie Moore would shoot the game-winning half-court shot to complete the comeback. It would be in the exact same place as when Ja’Quan Newton shot one to beat North Carolina on February 27, 2018.
