Florida State at Georgia Tech Basketball Preview and How to Watch

Following a six-game winning streak, the Florida State Seminoles (13-5, 6-2 ACC) will earn the chance on Wednesday night to exact revenge on last year’s ACC Championship opponent — Georgia Tech. The Noles’ hold recent quad-one wins over Duke and Miami (Florida) and have been trending upwards in the NCAA tournament race at No. 3 in the current ACC standings.

Georgia Tech, meanwhile, has strayed in the opposite direction since winning the conference tournament last year — they’ve lost six of their seven ACC games and sit dead last in the standings.

Here’s the breakdown of how both teams will handle last year’s Conference Championship rematch.

Series History

Florida State leads the overall series history at 44 wins to Georgia Tech’s 31. The Noles’ have won 15 of the last 19, which includes a five-game win streak from 2017 to 2020. Georgia Tech remains the victors from the last two matchups.

Last Time They Played

Georgia Tech bounced FSU in the 2021 ACC Championship Game to earn a coveted spot off the bubble and into the official NCAA Tournament field. Josh Pastner’s crew entered the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed while Florida State was No. 2 and ranked 15th in the country, but an 80-75 upset over the ‘Noles propelled the Yellow Jackets to a position as the Midwest region’s No. 9 seed.

Georgia Tech Overview

Contrary to their fancy finish to 2021, the road for Georgia Tech has been the product of continuous letdowns — an 0-4 record against ranked opponents, with disappointment stemming from defeats to Wisconsin (No. 11) LSU (No. 19), USC (No. 15) and Duke (No. 9). At 8-10, the Yellow Jackets own the last-place record in the ACC Standings (1-6 in conference play) and have dropped five of their last seven. The team’s wins in that time period were against Boston College (8-10, 3-5 ACC) and Clayton State (0-1).

Player to Watch: G Michael Devoe

Yellow Jackets’ guard Michael Devoe owns up to fruition as one of top scorers in the ACC, with an average of 19.5 points scored per game. That’s second in the conference and is only behind Wake Forest’s Alondes Williams (20.4). Devoe also bolstered his resume a few days ago by putting up 20 points against Clayton State. He did have a bit of a slump entering that game — compared to an average of 52.8% made three-pointers in his first nine games, he went only 25% in his next seven — but remains the clear points scorer of the roster.

“We’ve had a tough schedule all year, but right here, this is something we really want right now – this opportunity to be able to play these top teams right here and hopefully get a win from these two games,” Devoe said regarding Georgia Tech’s games against Florida State and Miami.
