Canes Win on Senior Night, Are Now Bowl-Eligible

The Miami Hurricanes had a huge win on Senior Night, closing out with a win over the Virginia Tech Hokies, 38-26.

Freshman QB Tyler Van Dyke led the way for the Hurricanes, going 19 for 33 for 357 yards and three touchdowns. With his night, it broke Jameis Winston’s record of four straight games with 300 yards and three touchdowns. Also with the win, the Hurricanes improved to 6-5, which made them bowl-eligible for the third straight season under Manny Diaz, who has faced a lot of scrutiny during the 2021 season and is considered on the hot seat.

Miami:

It was a very rainy night at the Rock (Hard Rock Stadium), which woke up the Canes passing offense for some weird reason.

Miami started out very fast, and very quick. Their first drive was set up by a Jacolby George punt return to the Miami 45, and a Charleston Rambo 39-yard catch to the Virginia Tech 16. With that catch, that put Charleston Rambo over 1,000 receiving yards. Rambo would be the first WR to eclipse 1,000 yards for the first time since Allen Hurns in 2013. Rambo would finish the night with seven receptions for 116 yards. Will Mallory would finish off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass.

Despite a rough night for Jaylan Knighton and the Miami running game, he had two short rushing touchdowns, finishing the night with 14 carries for 17 yards and two touchdowns of one and three yards.

Tyler Van Dyke received his ‘Tyler Van Dimes’ nickname very well, putting the score at 28-10 when he completed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Brashard Smith.

Despite letting Virginia Tech creep back into the game, Miami held their will. They finished off the Hokies with another long Tyler Van Dyke touchdown, this time for 55 yards to senior WR Mike Harley.

Virginia Tech:

Virginia Tech played from behind early, and would continue to play from behind throughout the night.

Despite the loss, their running game was very efficient against a struggling run defense like Miami. QBs Chris Blumrick (who left the game with a leg injury) and Braxton Burmeister led the way, with a combined 30 carries for 184 yards.

Despite being down 31-13 at one point in the third quarter, the Hokies tried to come back. Chris Blumrick would throw two touchdown passes to Kaleb Smith and Da’Wain Lofton within a span of 4:13 to make the score 31-26. However, that’s as close as they would get.
