With the whole country watching, Tom Brady was able to beat the New England Patriots in his return to New England. Mac Jones played well, however, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out victorious.
Jones, the rookie out of Alabama, completed 31-of-40 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.
Meanwhile, Tom Brady had no touchdowns on 269 yards against his former team.
Overall, Mac Jones had a hell of a game, standing toe to toe with Brady. Jones was comfortable operating at hurry-up pace, putting together his most impressive drives from the no huddle.
Jones was able to set up a game-winning drive for New England. However, Nick Folk missed a 56-yard field goal in the rain with under a minute remaining. The kick looked good, but it doinked hard off of the left post, giving Tampa the 19-17 lead and the eventual win.
New England had no running game Sunday night. While it sounds funny or unrealistic, Tom Brady actually had more rushing yards than the entire Patriots team (Brady had three rushing yards compared to New England’s -1 as a team).
The Buccaneers defense played well, even with a thin defensive back group. In his Bucs debut, CB Richard Sherman recovered a fumble and had seven solo tackles. Also, CB Antoine Winfield Jr. recorded an interception in the first quarter. Furthermore, Tampa Bay’s defense put a ton of pressure on Mac Jones. As a team, the Buccaneers sacked Jones four times and had 12 QB hits.
