After entirely sitting out the first day of NBA Free Agency, the Orlando Magic have signed C Robin Lopez to a one-year, $5 million deal. Orlando will use part of their $9.5 million Mid-Level Exception in signing Lopez. Adding a veteran like Lopez was a priority entering the offseason.
During this past season in Washington, Lopez averaged 9.0 PPG, 3.8 RPG, and 0.6 BPG in 71 games. Lopez shot 63.3% from the field and 72.3% from the free-throw line. He played a key role in helping lead Washington to the eighth seed and the playoffs.
Lopez will join Orlando with a couple of coaching connections, too. While playing in Portland from 2013-2015, Lopez played under assistant coaches Nate Tibbetts and Dale Osbourne, with both in Orlando. The signing of Lopez to Orlando will fly under the radar, but it was a smart move nonetheless.
