Rizzo Hits HR, Yankees Edge Out Marlins

The Miami Marlins kicked off the first game of their home series against the New York Yankees with a 3-1 defeat. The loss marked the Marlins second consecutive defeat after narrowly falling to the Orioles 8-7. Miami continues to digress among the NL East standings, holding a record of 44-59. The Marlins are 10.5 games behind the first place New York Mets.

Pitching Battle

Towering right-hander Jameson Taillon took the mound for the Yankees on Friday night. The former 2nd overall pick tossed five strikeouts in just over five innings, allowing two runs. The Yankees relievers featured Jonathan Loasiga, Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman. The three relievers combined to allow just one run on three hits in the remaining four innings. Friday’s save was Chapman’s 21st of the season, giving him the 6th highest total in the MLB.

27-year-old pitcher Zach Thompson took the mound for the Marlins on Friday night. In five innings pitched, Thompson allowed just three hits and only one run. The 6-foot-7 right hander struck out five batters and walked a total of four. The majority of the damage came at the hands of relief pitcher Richard Bleier, who gave up two runs in a third of an inning.

Production At The Plate

Anthony Rizzo delivered his first home run as a New York Yankee on Friday night. The Yankees also welcomed a 2-run RBI on a single from utility infielder Rougned Odor. Second basemen D.J Lemahieu also collected a base-hit. 

Center Fielder Magneurus Sierra put together a solid performance, finishing 2-for-4 The Marlins failed to tally an RBI on friday, with their lone run coming from Jazz Chisholm advancing off of a double play.

The series will return to action on Saturday at 6:10 pm. The Yankees are expected to start right-hander Domingo German while the Marlins starter is unknown.
