Padres Top Marlins 3-2, Mark Melancon Earns 29th Save

The San Diego Padres came out on top Thursday night thanks to some clutch hitting and stellar defense. Although they were able to come out with a win, Miami Marlins pitchers did not make it easy as the Padres only scored three runs. This win puts the Padres at 57-42 on the season while the Marlins now sit at 41-56.

Recap

In the top of the second inning, the Padres were able to crack the scoreboard first. With a force-out by San Diego’s Jurickson Profar, the Padres were able to score Eric Hosmer. A few innings later, San Diego continued to grind out at-bats and managed to score another run. This run came by way of a line-shot-single by Profar to score outfielder Tommy Pham. With nothing from Miami, the Padres tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth inning that would give them the win.

As the Padres controlled the first half of the game, the Marlins had some late life in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the help of a Joe Panik single, Isan Diaz was able to score. This now turned the game into just a two-run affair. A few pitches later, the Marlins had the bases loaded and outfielder Starling Marte was walked. This walk allowed a run to score, making it a one-run game. Unfortunately, the Marlins were not able to score another run as Padres pitchers Tim Hill and Mark Melancon held down the San Diego lead.
