Don Mattingly is expected to reinstate his role as the Miami Marlins manager in 2022.
Mattingly, who currently stands as the longest-tenured coach in Marlins history, received the news from GM Kim NG a week before his mutual option for the 2022 season was set to expire.
“It’s a good feeling to be wanted,” said the team manager via the Miami Herald.
Mattingly’s option for the Marlins originally had a deadline of July 15th. However, the management team wasted no time in making its decision, reaffirming confidence in the longtime manager.
“Donnie has been steady at the helm, and I think that’s one of his greatest attributes,” Ng said Thursday on a Bally Sports Florida Telecast. “He’s incredibly patient. I think he’s got a great way with the young players. He’s very positive with them.”
Prior to his time in Miami, Don Mattingly coached the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015. He posted a record of 446-363 and captured five straight winning seasons with the organization.
Now in the Sunshine State, Mattingly has managed the Marlins organization for six years. His current performance with the franchise stands at 345-447, a showing that’s only seen him make the playoffs once (2020) in his time with the team.
However, there’s no shortage of love in South Florida for this longtime leader.
