Miami Marlins Late Life Is Not Enough Against Philly

The Miami Marlins continue to hold the last place spot in the NL East as they drop a game to the Phillies on Tuesday night. Behind a 2-hit outing by Vince Velasquez, the Marlins weren’t able to do much. With this loss, the Marlins now sit at 33-45 with a .423 winning percentage. This now puts Miami four games behind the Atlanta Braves which they will see this Friday in Truist Park.

Recap

With starting pitchers Trevor Rogers and Vince Velasquez on the mound, you knew it would be a pitching duel. Trevor Rogers of the Marlins went 5.2 innings while racking up nine strikeouts. However along with these nine strikeouts came four walks, two hits, and two errors by the Marlins defense. On the Phillies side of things, Vince Velasquez went seven innings while retiring seven by strikeouts and only surrendering two hits.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jean Segura was hit with a pitch that allowed him to reach first base. Along with Segura, Bryce Harper was able to reach base by the walk. This led to trouble for Trevor Rogers as he gave up an RBI single which scored Segura in the first.

Later on in the game, Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins tacked on another run by the big fly homerun. To this point, the Miami Marlins had not reached home plate yet. In the seventh inning of play, Odubel Herrera of the Phillies knocked in one more run and scored himself on a wild pitch. This was all the Phillies would get.

Come the eighth inning of play, the Marlins were able to load the bases due to some walks. As the situation looked, the Marlins were hoping to plate a few runs. They were able to do so by a wild pitch. This run made the game 4-1 Phillies in the eighth and gave the Marlins a spark. This spark was ignited when Adam Duvall hit a towering home run in the top of the ninth inning. As the Marlins were now one run away from tying the game with no outs, they were not able to scrape across one more. The game ended 4-3 Phillies in a close battle.
