Red Sox Top Marlins 3-1 In Full-Capacity Game

The Boston Red Sox topped the Miami Marlins in a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon. Boston’s victory occurred on the same night that the organization hosted their first restriction-less game at Fenway Park since 2019. The estimated attendance was just above 25,000 fans.

Pitching Battle

Former Marlins pitcher Nathan Eovaldi tossed five scoreless innings for the Red Sox. Eovaldi struck out a total of seven batters while allowing just four hits. Despite holding a 4.00 ERA, the Texas native has posted an impressive 6-2 record this season. Eovaldi was replaced by relief pitcher Adam Ottavino, who narrowly escaped a 7th inning dilemma with the bases loaded. Closer Matt Barnes was later credited with his 12th save of the season.

Marlins ace Trevor Rogers did not perform to the recent standard he has set for himself. The second-year pitcher gave up nine hits and two runs in six innings. Rogers was replaced by relief pitcher Adam Cimber who gave up one run on two total hits.

Plate Production

Boston welcomed RBI’s from Hunter Renfroe, Kevin Plawecki, and Bobby Dalbec, all on singles. Designated hitter J.D Martinez continued to build on his impressive season, collecting two hits in four plate appearances.

While Miami struggled to reach the scoreboard, putting the ball in play wasn’t an issue. The Marlins recorded 10 total hits, with each outfielder tallying at least one. Outfielder Magnerius Sierra had one of his most impressive outings of the season, collecting three hits in five plate appearances. Sierra also had two steals. In addition, Jesus Aguilar recorded the teams only RBI on a single.

Future Notes

Rookie Shortstop Jazz Chisholm has been a bright spot for the Marlins this season. While the Bahamian infielder has missed the past four games to a sprained ankle, he may return Sunday. Otherwise, Chisholm may see an IL stint. The Marlins were also without outfielder Adam Duvall who missed time due to a sore left arm.

Next Up

Miami will return to action on Sunday afternoon. The Marlins will start pitcher Sandy Alcantara against Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez.
