Cody Poteet and Marlins Cruise Past Mets 5-1

Cody Poteet and the Miami Marlins collected a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. The loss dropped the Mets record to 21-19 as Miami’s NL East rivals prepare to take on the Rockies this Monday. Although Miami has tallied more wins than New York, the Mets winning record sits them atop of the division.

Marlins rookie Cody Poteet certainly raised some eyebrows after Sunday’s performance. The 26-year-old rookie tossed a seven-inning shutout while collecting his first professional hit and RBI. Poteet did not allow a single walk while holding the Mets to only three hits for the afternoon. John Curtiss and Anthony Bender took over as the Marlins relief pitchers in the last two respective innings, allowing five total hits.

Former Marlin pitcher Jordan Yamamoto served as the Mets starter Sunday afternoon. Yamamoto had a tough outing, citing shoulder discomfort as a reason. The third-year pitcher allowed five runs while giving up six hits and two walks in four innings. Robert Gsellman proved to be an effective replacement for Yamamoto, allowing just one hit and no runs in three innings pitched. However, Gsellman’s impressive outing wasn’t enough to erase Yamamoto’s rocky performance.

Productive Outing

The Marlins totaled seven hits during Sunday’s game, each one being a single. Aside from Poteet’s milestone single, the Marlins received RBI’s from Jazz Chisholm, Miguel Rojas, and Jesus Aguilar. Chisholm continues to build on an eye-opening rookie season as he leads the team with a .290 batting average.

Although the Mets failed to cross the plate more than once, they tallied six hits. New York failed to capitalize, partially due to the fact that the team did not reach base on a walk. Sunday’s game featured hits from both pitchers, as Jordan Yamamoto recorded a single.
