Tampa Bay Rays Shut Out in Loss to Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays dropped the second game of their three-game series to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. Pitching led the way for both teams, as both teams combined for just ten hits and one run. The Yankees pitching proved tough for the second night in a row, as the Rays lost 1-0.

Stellar Pitching

The Rays pitching staff gave another stellar performance, with five different pitchers holding the strong Yankees lineup to just six hits and one run. The Rays utilized an opener, once again, in the form of Collin McHugh. McHugh pitched just two innings, but proved effective striking out two batters and allowing just one baserunner via a walk. Ryan Yarbrough pitched the longest for the Rays, going three and a third innings following McHugh’s opening two. He was equally effective during his time on the bump, striking out four and allowing just two hits and no earned runs. The Yankees’ lone run came in the seventh inning when center fielder Aaron Hicks hit a sacrifice fly which allowed Aaron Judge to score. The run was credited to Rays pitcher Ryan Thompson, who was also credited with the loss.

Offensive Struggles Continue

The Rays offense was completely shut down as they had the challenge of facing Gerrit Cole. Gerrit Cole went eight innings for the Yankees while striking out twelve Rays hitters and allowing just four hits. The ninth inning was more of the same for the Rays; they were completely shut down by closer Aroldis Chapman, who struck out one and allowed no baserunners.

Worrisome Future

Wednesday’s loss brings the Rays record to .500 at 19-19. This moves them to fourth place in the AL East and fans have to wonder if this is the same team who won the AL Pennant just a year ago.

Tampa Bay will face the Yankees on Thursday afternoon for the series finale. Rich Hill will take the ball for the Rays and will face Jameson Taillon of the Yankees.
