Why Tampa Bay Should Think About Drafting Kyle Trask

It’s safe to say the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can’t have it any better at the quarterback position. Right?

Well, that’s at least the case for now, but quite frankly we’re more interested in the future. While the Buccaneers do have the best quarterback in NFL history, Tom vs. time is becoming more of a topic for discussion by the year. As much as we can admire the GOAT for what he has done, “Father Time” will still earn the last laugh in the long run, and that’s just the straight up truth.

Players get old and teams eventually move on from their veterans. It’s happened with plenty of great hall of famers before, and it will eventually happen with the players in today’s league. However, like all positions, the quarterback job is still expendable. It doesn’t matter who’s under center, as there’s always someone else ready to take control of a team.

The Buccaneers Future Quarterback Options

For the Buccaneers, that someone is still unknown.

Sure, Ryan Griffin is on the roster, but he certainly doesn’t qualify as a strong franchise quarterback. Free agency frenzy has just about wrapped up, so that route for the Buccaneers seems pretty unlikely as well.

That limits Tampa Bay’s options to the NFL Draft. The Buccaneers (obviously) gained the 32nd overall pick in the draft after winning the Super Bowl. While most of the well known quarterbacks will find their destinations before it’s the franchise’s time on the clock, there could very well still be a few good choices left at pick #32.

These options include none another than Florida’s own Kyle Trask.

Who is Kyle Trask?

Kyle Trask - Football - Florida Gators

A Florida native, Kyle Trask took his talents to the University of Florida in Gainesville. Although his first three years as a Gator were spent riding the bench, Trask finally received the opportunity to make his mark in the 2019 season. His efforts, while not necessarily over the top incredible, qualified as enough to get him the starting job in 2020.

From there on out, Trask produced pure dominance and numbers. The Gators quarterback achieved a record breaking season in which he passed for 4,283 yards and 43 touchdowns. His strong efforts unsurprisingly established his place in the Heisman race, further earning him respect around the CFB world. When all was said and done, Trask finished as a finalist in college football’s most coveted trophy race.

Why the Buccaneers Should Take Trask with the 32nd Pick

Surprisingly, the strong recognition still hasn’t helped Trask in the NFL Draft race, but that doesn’t necessarily ruin his possibility of qualifying as a first round pick. With a fairly strong arm and good awareness on the field, Trask just might be the guy Tampa Bay wants. For what he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for in experience at a high level of play. His ability to throw to a wide variety of receivers in college was undoubtedly second to none. No matter who he has around him, Trask can get the ball into the endzone in the toughest of circumstances. He’s no Tom Brady, but his positive traits certainly sound familiar.

Concluding Thoughts

Obviously, there’s still a good chance the Buccaneers don’t pick up Trask in the first round. We know he’s a great quarterback, but there are a few other go-to options at the coveted position as well. Players such as Kellon Mond and Jamie Newman qualify as names that could surface in the earlier rounds of the draft.

Of course there’s also a strong possibility that Bruce Arians and Jason Licht aren’t even thinking about taking a successor to the GOAT. After all, there are a few other team needs that do need to be addressed.

However, it certainly wouldn’t hurt Tampa Bay to have a bit more depth under center.
