Marlins Top Braves in Slugfest

The Miami Marlins were able to top their division rival, the Atlanta Braves in Tuesday night’s slugfest by a score of 14-8. The Marlins’ bats stayed hot throughout the game, while their bullpen was able to keep a strong Braves lineup relatively quiet late in the game.

Pablo Lopez Struggles

Pablo Lopez got the start for the Marlins and struggled early. He quickly allowed two runs to score off a home run by Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna, which also allowed Freddie Freeman to score. Lopez then allowed another home run to be hit by young star Ozzie Albies, which put the Marlins in a three-run hole to start the game. Lopez was able to go just four innings in his start, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. This was the first start in which Lopez truly struggled, as he had allowed just two earned runs in his previous 11.2 innings coming into the game.

Bullpen Shows Out

The Marlins bullpen was magnificent throughout the remainder of the game. Six different pitchers appeared in the final five innings, and of the six, five were able to have shut down appearances. Paul Campbell, being the only one who allowed a run, allowed two in the ninth after walking two Braves hitters who would score on a fielding error made by left fielder, Adam Duvall.

Adam Duvall Has Big Night

Hitting-wise, Miami was on fire Tuesday night against a starting pitcher who is normally a tough face-off, in Max Fried. After falling behind early, the Marlins quickly came back after scoring two runs in the top of the second, thanks to a home run from Brian Anderson, as well as an RBI double from Miguel Rojas. They then tied the game at three after a single from Starling Marte. Adam Duvall was the true standout from the game, however, as he was able to put up four hits which included two home runs. In total, Duvall drove in seven runs and was a triple shy of the cycle against his former team.

Adam Duvall on playing against his former team: “I felt a little amped up playing against guys I played with for a while. I have nothing but respect for those guys over there.”

Takeaways

  • Adam Duvall joined Alex Rodriguez as the only two players since 1954 to have multiple games with 7 RBI, 2 HR, and 4 R.
  • Marlins catcher Jorge Alfaro returned after he was held out on Monday due to lingering hamstring tightness.
