On Monday afternoon, Tampa Bay and San Jose made a one-for-one swap. The Sharks sent defenseman Frederik Claesson to the Lightning in return for goalie prospect Magnus Chrona.

Tampa Bay has a star goalie in Andrei Vasilevskiy, who will not be leaving anytime soon. On top of that, they have plenty of goalie prospects. All of these prospects are fighting for an uncertain spot in the league. On the other end of the United States, are the San Jose Sharks. San Jose has been collecting goalie prospects in hope that someone could fix their goalie problem. In a far different goalie situation from Tampa Bay, San Jose is hoping Magnus Chrona can fix these issues.

Chrona, 20-years-old, was drafted in the 5th round, 152nd overall in 2018 by the Lightning. The Skellefteå native has spent the last two years in the NCAA, with the University of Denver. The Pioneer goalie has played 45 college games. In that time, Chrona holds a 23-17-4 record, 2.28 GAA, and a .915 save percentage. During his time at the University of Denver, Chrona was also named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for NCHC Goalie of the Year.

Lightning acquire defenseman Fredrik Claesson from Sharks

Frederik Claesson was originally a 5th round pick in 2011 by the Ottawa Senators out of Djurgardens IF in Sweden. Claesson is a left-handed defenseman that measures up at 6’0” and 201 pounds. He is 28-years-old and is on a two-way contract for the league minimum of $700,000. He is currently on the Sharks Taxi Squad and presumably will be added to the Lightning’s taxi squad.

The six-year NHL veteran has played a total of 159 games, with 28 total points (7 goals and 21 assists). In all, Claesson shows good even-strength defense numbers, while not providing very much in the way of offensive prowess.
