On Tuesday, March 16th, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Lions receiver Marvin Jones Jr. to a two-year, $12.5 million deal with $9 million guaranteed. The 31-year-old has had back-to-back seasons with nine touchdowns, including 978 receiving yards last year. Jones projects to be a top wide receiver for Jacksonville, with DJ Chark Jr. in competition for the WR1 spot.
DJ Chark, who was a Pro Bowler in 2019, had 706 yards and three touchdowns on 53 receptions in 2020. But in 2019, Chark had a career-high 1008 yards and eight touchdowns on 73 receptions.
Marvin Jones Jr. and Phillip Dorsett
Marvin Jones will be a veteran presence for a young group of receivers. He’s more than that though, as he is a physical receiver who is great at making contested catches. He’ll pair nicely with DJ Chark’s speed and Laviska Shenault’s versatility. The Jaguars also signed WR Phillip Dorsett on a one-year deal. Dorsett is a good depth piece, and had 397 yards and 5 TD’s in 14 games when he last played with New England in 2019. Jacksonville also added Jamal Agnew who can play wide receiver, but is useful for his elite kick returning abilities.
The Loss of Keelan Cole
The Jaguars lost Keelan Cole, who had one of the best catches in Jaguars history, to Free Agency. Cole signed with the New York Jets on a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
Cole spent four seasons with the Jaguars and had his best season last year, when he caught 55 passes for 642 yards and five touchdowns. The 27-year-old can also return kicks and punts. He had a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown last year.
