Marlins Sign Adam Duvall

On Tuesday afternoon, the Miami Marlins signed slugger and former All-Star outfielder Adam Duvall. This comes on the heels of their recent trade of pitcher Jordan Yamamoto to the New York Mets.

Adam Duvall’s Past

Adam Duvall is a masher, hitting 113 home runs in just seven seasons in the big leagues. His best years came with the Cincinnati Reds in 2016 and 2017, where he batted .245 and swatted 64 homers. However, since 2017, his career has stalled batting barely over .210 with just 41 home runs. Duvall however, does have some upside left as he is just 32, coming off a shortened season in which he hit 16 home runs and had an OPS of .833.

Contract Situation

Adam Duvall signed a one-year contract with the Marlins, worth a guaranteed $5M. Duvall will earn $2M in 2021, with a $7M mutual option or $3M buyout in 2022. Prior to his non-tender by the Atlanta Braves, he was expected to get close to 4 million in arbitration. However, the Marlins got the former All-Star in a cheap, high upside deal.

His Fit With The Marlins

Duvall joins a team that has tons of outfield depth already. But with Duvall’s experience both at the plate and in the field, he seems to be a lock at the corner outfield position. But what do the Marlins do with their depth? The Los Angeles Dodgers have already inquired about Marlins 1B/OF Garrett Cooper. Expect the Marlins to get some other trade interest, whether it’s for Cooper or guys like Harold Ramirez, Lewis Brinson, or Monte Harrison. But whatever the situation is, the Marlins must sort out playing time for several players, or perhaps make a trade.
