Lightning Defeat Blue Jackets in Overtime

On Thursday Night, the Tampa Bay Lightning faced the Columbus Blue Jackets. This was the first of eight meetings between these two teams this season. It was also their first meeting since these two teams met in the playoffs last year. Both teams performed great but in the end only one team could win. It would end up being a Lightning win in OT with Brayden Point scoring the game-winner.

Recap

Tampa may have won the game but Columbus got off to an early start. Just 21 seconds into the game, Oliver Bjorkstand scored on an assist by Max Domi.

Late in the second period however, Tampa would go in with lots of energy and ready to score some goals. With an odd-man rush, Center Blake Coleman scored his second goal of the season to tie it up at one. Then just over a minute later, Mathieu Joseph shot a beautiful one-timer to give the Lightning their first lead of the night.

Entering the 3rd period, Columbus was on the power play. Nick Foligno tied the game up for the Blue Jackets, 47 seconds into the third.

This game would then go into Overtime. In OT, Brayden Point scored the game-winning goal on a doorstep pass from Victor Hedman.

“Heddy wheels around and puts one on my tape, and I’m able to get enough of it,” Point said after the victory. “I didn’t get all of it. Lucky enough it bounces the right way and goes in. But a great feed by Heddy.”

Takeaways

  • The Bolts stay undefeated, improving to 3-0-0.
  • Drama between the Blue Jackets and Pierre-Luc Dubois continues. Dubois was benched after the first period, finishing the game with only 3:55 total ice time on 5 shifts. This means Dubois spent the final 44:53 of the game on the bench.
