On Thursday evening at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena in Boca Raton, Florida, an intense clash unfolded between the Owls of FAU and Temple University. Despite Temple’s challenging season record of 1-10 in the AAC, FAU coach Dusty May emphasized the significance of role-playing, citing that when his team showcases their “unsung heroes” as they did tonight, they become formidable opponents. This victory was particularly crucial for FAU following their narrow and disappointing 76-73 loss to UAB.
The matchup marked the first meeting in history between these two schools, with FAU transitioning from Conference USA before the season commenced.
Johnell Davis’ consistent scoring performance of 17 points fell in like with the theme of the night as FAU’s leading scorer was more than dependable. However, FAU showcased depth as four other players reached double figures, including Brandon Weatherspoon and Alijah Martin, each contributing 16 points.
FAU asserted dominance early on, controlling the game for much of the first half. Temple struggled to contain FAU’s offensive onslaught, with Nicholas Boyd and Alijah Martin showcasing their scoring prowess. The Owls extended their lead significantly with a decisive 15-2 run, highlighted by Brandon Weatherspoon’s impressive three-point shooting as well.
Weatherspoon’s contributions weren’t limited to offense, as he played a pivotal role in FAU’s defensive efforts, ensuring crucial stops throughout the game. FAU’s home sellout streak continued, reaching an impressive 17 games with only one loss along the way. Temple mounted a comeback in the second half, narrowing the deficit to just two points with a 7-0 run, but Weatherspoon’s resilience and additional five points helped FAU maintain their lead.
The return of F Giancarlo Rosado from injury provided a boost to FAU’s squad, further solidifying their depth and resilience. Martin added that having him back “was amazing… he opens up our offense and we missed that.”
