FSU Head Coach Mike Norvell Signs Extension Through 2029

On Wednesday, Florida State Seminoles head coach, Mike Norvell, signed an extension to stay with the team through 2029. FSU is projected to pay him around $8.05 million yearly. Norvell is coming off a 10-3 season with the Seminoles. The season also ended in a Cheez-it bowl victory against Oklahoma.

Norvell’s Head Coaching Career Before Florida State

The 41-year-old coach began at Memphis in 2016 coaching in the AAC. With the Tigers, he never had a losing season. Two of his four seasons in West Tennessee were 10-win campaigns and all four of his seasons were bowl-berths. In his final season in Memphis, the team went to the Cotton Bowl against Penn State where they lost 53-39.

Unfortunately, Norvell never won a bowl game for the Tigers. However, he was able to get Memphis into the top 25 multiple times. He even go them as high as 15th in the country.

In 2020, Norvell took Willie Taggart’s spot as the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles. FSU had not seen lots of success in a few years prior to Norvell’s entrance into the program. FSU was 18-20 in the three years before he arrived on campus.

The Seminoles also had their well-acclaimed bowl game streak come to an end in 2018. It was the first year they hadn’t gone to a bowl game since 1981.

Norvell’s Tallahassee Revival

In his first two seasons, Norvell had his bumps and bruises he took. In 2020, the team went 3-6 (schedule shortened due to COVID-19). In 2021, the team went 5-7 and started the season 0-4. This included a devastating week two loss at the hands of Jacksonville State on a Hail Mary. However, there was improvement shown from the two years.

Last season was where Norvell shined. The Seminoles finished the season 11th in the AP Top 25 and many have them as contenders for a national title in the next coming years. He also got his first bowl win as the head coach of a division one school after going 0-4 at Memphis.

Norvell before the 2022 season on FSU as a program: “We’re going to build this the right way and we are going to build it in a way that is going to sustain. Success is coming, I ultimately believe that.”

It is clear that Florida State has found their man. The Seminoles are confident in the way he approaches the continuous progression and growth needed to get FSU back to the top of college football’s hierarchy.
