Despite being one of the NBA’s youngest and most inconsistent teams, the Magic were given plenty of notable games and matchups throughout their schedule, starting with their first three games of the season. On opening night, October 19th, the Magic will travel to Detroit to face the former 2021 No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham and the Pistons. Like Orlando, Detroit is stocked with promising young talent, led by Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, Isiah Stewart, and Marvin Bagley, alongside 2022 first-round picks Jaden Ivey (No. 5) and Jalen Duren (No. 13). After Orlando selected Paolo Banchero with the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, this game between the Magic and the Pistons will mark the first time in NBA history that the two most recent first overall draft selections will face off on the opening night of the season.

After their highly anticipated game against Cunningham and Detroit, Orlando will quickly travel to Atlanta to play the Hawks. While this matchup is interesting for a number of the reasons, the biggest reason is due to the recent grievances between Atlanta’s Dejounte Murray and Orlando’s Banchero. For those who don’t know, this will be the first meeting between Murray and Banchero since they both played at Isiah Thomas’ Pro-Am Basketball Tournament in Seattle, Washington. Following that game, Orlando will return to the Amway Center for their home opener against the reigning Eastern Conference Champion Boston Celtics.

Just six days after facing off against Boston, Orlando will face a former ally in the Amway Center. On October 28th, former Magic Head Coach, Steve Clifford will make his return to Orlando, now as the Head Coach of the Charlotte Hornets. This will be the first time Clifford has returned to Orlando as a Head Coach since re-signing in the Summer of 2021. While as the Head Coach of Orlando, Clifford posted a 96-131 regular-season record and led the Magic to two playoff appearances in three seasons. Shortly thereafter, the Magic will fly to Oklahoma City to face the Thunder in a highly anticipated matchup. This meeting will be the first between Banchero and Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. This game will also be the first time that Holmgren will play against his former high school teammate, Jalen Suggs. The Thunder will play the Magic again on January 4th in Orlando.

When reviewing Orlando’s schedule, it’s worth noting that NBA fans will have to wait a while before they get to watch the “Sunshine State Matchup”. Before their first game against Miami on January 27th, Orlando will have already played all 28 other teams at least once. Orlando and Miami will also meet on February 11th, March 11th, and April 9th to conclude the 2022-2023 season.
