According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Orlando Magic have officially signed Free Agent Guard and Summer League Standout Kevon Harris to a two-way contract. The signing was later confirmed by Orlando’s President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman, but the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, per team policy.
At just 25 years old, Harris has already had a shaky start to his basketball career. After a solid four-year career (2016-2020) at Stephen F. Austin where Harris averaged 14.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG, and 1.6 APG while shooting 48.3% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range in 127 career games, Harris went Undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft. As a result, Harris decided to spend the 2020-2021 season in the NBA’s G League and then overseas, which was highlighted by stints with the Raptors 905 in the NBAGL and KK Zadar in Croatia.
After joining the Toronto Raptors’ G-League Affiliate Team in 2020, Harris had trouble in finding adequate playing time, as Harris averaged just 9.0 MPG, 3.1 PPG, 1.1 RPG, 0.4 APG, and 0.1 SPG while shooting 40.0% from the field and 30.0% from downtown. In spite of these struggles, Harris quickly emerged as a full-time starter in Toronto in 2021-2022, as he averaged 30.0 MPG, 15.1 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 3.8 APG, and 1.2 SPG while going 47.3% from the field and 34.3% from three-point range.
Despite his impressive season with Toronto’s G-League team, Harris was released into Free Agency at the end of the season. Fortunately, Harris quickly received another opportunity to showcase his basketball talents, as Minnesota signed Harris to be part of their 2022 Summer League team. Harris certainly didn’t disappoint in his five-game stint at Las Vegas, as he averaged a career-high 27.1 MPG, 15.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.0 SPG while shooting 57.7% from the field and 45.8% from three-point range.
In reference to Harris’ solid showing at Summer League, it didn’t take long for interested teams to inquire to his agent, Evernard Billy Davis. Sure enough, Orlando signed Harris to a two-way contract, which means the Magic will have filled both of their two-way contract slots. For context, Orlando re-signed Restricted Free Agent Admiral Schofield to a two-way contract on July First.
With this said, Orlando now has 18 total players under contract, with 15 on guaranteed standard contracts, one (Devin Cannady) on a non-guaranteed deal, and Schofield and Harris on two-way contracts. Although Harris is unlikely to compete for a spot in Orlando’s rotation, he will likely spend the majority of the 2022-2023 season with the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G-League Affiliate Team.
After averaging nearly 16 points for Timberwolves in summer league, guard Kevon Harris has agreed on a two-way NBA contract with the Orlando Magic, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.
