Orlando Magic Re-Sign Restricted Free Agent Bol Bol to Two-Year, $3.8 Million Deal

According to Orlando Sentinel’s Khobi Price, the Orlando Magic have officially resigned Restricted Free Agent Bol Bol to a two-year, $3.8 Million contract. After resigning fellow Free Agents Mo Bamba and Garry Harris on June 30th, the Magic have decided to do the same with Bol, keeping him in Orlando until the 2024 NBA Season. In 53 career games, Bol has averaged 6.2 MPG, 2.7 PPG, 1.2 RPG, and 0.3 BPG while shooting 47.8% from the field and 37.8% from three-point range.

Bol’s skimpy stats can be attributed to his extensive injury history, as Bol has missed a combined 174 games over his first three NBA seasons due to a Stress Fracture in his Foot. As a result, Bol missed the rest of the 2021-2022 NBA Season after undergoing foot surgery, and finished the season with just 5.8 MPG, 2.4 PPG, and 1.4 RPG along with 55.6/25.0/40.0 shooting splits in 14 games. After being selected by Miami as the No. 44 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Bol has been involved in four different trades, including the most recent trade that sent Bol and P.J. Dozier from Boston to Orlando in exchange for the Magic’s 2023 second-round pick.

In spite of Bol’s concerning injury history, Orlando is certainly interested in his potential moving forward, as the Magic decided to give Bol the $2.7 Million Qualifying Offer on June 29th, which made him a Restricted Free Agent. For context, this gave Orlando the ability to match any offer made to Bol by any other team, or an offer sheet. This gave the Magic a greater chance of retaining Bol, also known as the “right of first refusal”, and it seemed to work with Bol back in Orlando.

With Bol under contract in Orlando until the 2023-2024 NBA Season, Orlando has continued their rebuild by accumulating young talent. In addition to Bol, Orlando still has former first-round picks Wendell Carter Jr., Bamba, Franz Wagner, and Chuma Okeke in the lineup, along with the 2022 NBA Draft picks Paolo Banchero and Caleb Houstan. Likewise, Orlando also fields a deep rotation of guards, headlined by Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, Jalen Suggs, R.J. Hampton, and Harris. Although the Magic aren’t expected to contend for the NBA Championship within the coming years, resigning Bol to a team-friendly contract is a step in the right direction for Orlando’s future trajectory.
