Orlando Magic Acquire P.J. Dozier and Bol Bol from the Boston Celtics at NBA Trade Deadline

In a day filled with plenty of trades and player movement around the NBA, the Orlando Magic decided to get in on the action before the Trade Deadline. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Magic have acquired P.J. Dozier, Bol Bol, a 2028 second-round pick, and cash considerations from Boston in exchange for Orlando’s 2023 second-round pick. In a corresponding move, Orlando has waived Michael Carter-Williams, E’Twaun Moore, and the newly-acquired Dozier to meet the 15-player roster limit.

Unloading Dozier’s and Bol’s contracts allowed Boston to later acquire San Antonio’s Derrick White and Houston’s Daniel Theis through other trades. Dozier and Bol were originally on the Denver Nuggets before being traded to Boston as part of the three-team trade on January 19th, 2022; a trade that sent Juancho Hernangomez to San Antonio and Bryn Forbes to Denver.

With the addition of Bol, Orlando will now decide if they believe whether or not Bol will be a meaningful contributor to their rebuild. At just 22-years-old, Bol has plenty of time to develop into an elite rim protector that the Nuggets envisioned him as when taking him 44th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. While Bol had lackluster averages of 2.4 PPG, 1.4 RPG, and 0.4 APG in 14 games this year, his season has been cut short due to having Foot Surgery on January 18th, which will sideline him for eight to twelve weeks. Bol is set to become a Restricted Free Agent this summer. As previously mentioned, Orlando cut Veteran Guards Carter-Williams and Moore to have exactly 15 roster spots. Both Carter-Williams (Left Ankle Surgery in August) and Moore (Left Knee Sprain in October) sustained season-ending injuries, so the moves made sense.
