Hurricanes Fall Short, Lose In-State Battle to Seminoles, 61-60

The Florida State Seminoles catapulted to the top of the ACC standings on Saturday, going on the road and withstanding a comeback by their in-state rivals, the Miami Hurricanes, 61-60. With the win, the Seminoles move to 13-5, and 6-2 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes drop to 14-5, and the same 6-2 in ACC play. The Seminoles have not lost to their rivals since January 7th of 2018.

Game Recap:

For the Seminoles, Caleb Mills scored 16 points, while Anthony Polite scored 15 with seven rebounds and two assists. Malik Osborne led the Seminoles in assists with eight.

Despite missing the game-winning contested fadeaway jumper in the waning seconds, Isaiah Wong led Miami in scoring with 22 points. Wong has scored in double figures in 18 straight games. Kam McGusty and Charlie Moore, meanwhile, each had 12 points.

This game would be a game of two halves, each being dominated by one team. The first half would be dominated by the Seminoles, as they would go into half leading 43-19. The Hurricanes would come back in the second half out-scoring their opposition 41-18, but it would not be enough.

The Seminoles dominated the first half after shooting 56.3% (18 for 32) with 15-made shots inside the three-point arc. Polite made all five of his shot attempts and scored 13 points. Five Florida State reserves contributed 15 points, too.

The Hurricanes did just the opposite, shooting 26.1% (6 for 23) and missing 11 of 12 shots from beyond the three-point line. The Hurricanes had one point off the bench before the half.

The Hurricanes were so good in the second half that FSU coach Leonard Hamilton used his final timeout with 5:39 left in the second half to stop the Hurricanes rush. The Seminoles only made seven of their last 20 shot attempts.
