Dolphins Defeat Giants, Win Streak Increases to Five

The Miami Dolphins picked up their fifth-straight win, defeating the short-handed New York Giants 20-9. Tua Tagovailoa continues to improve, completing 30 of 41 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Jaelan Phillips would also have two sacks on the day.

Isaiah Ford and Mack Hollins would have short touchdowns passes of two and five yards from Tua Tagovailoa. It would be their only catches on the day. Jaylen Waddle would have another terrific day, recording nine receptions for 90 yards. Waddle would have what seemed like a scary injury, but he would return a few minutes later.

The touchdown pass to Mack Hollins was not only a great catch, but ended a 14-play, 89-yard drive where Tua Tagovailoa went 11-of-12 passing for 77 yards. Mack Hollins would wobble the ball, and eventually come down with both feet in-bounds.

The Giants would come into Sunday’s game short-handed. Their starting QB, Daniel Jones, was ruled out earlier this week with a neck injury. So, back-up QB Mike Glennon would play on Sunday. He was mediocre, completing 23 of 44 passes for 187 yards and an interception. Graham Gano would go three of four on field goals, missing the one that would have put the game within eight with 10 seconds left.

This game featured only two penalties. The first penalty of the game came with 1:55 left in the first half, when New York’s Leonard Williams jumped offside. The second penalty, and first on the Dolphins, happened with 7:18 left in the third quarter when left tackle Liam Eichenberg was guilty of a false start.

Takeaways and Game Notes:

  • Jaelan Phillips is the first NFL rookie since Julius Peppers in 2002 to record at least six sacks in a three-game span.
  • Phillips is up to 8.5 sacks on the season, a Miami Dolphins rookie record.
  • Jaylen Waddle has set a Miami Dolphins rookie record with 85 receptions. It breaks the previous mark of 84 set by Jarvis Landry in 2014.
  • The 65-yard punt is the longest in Michael Palardy’s five-year NFL career.
  • The 21 completions by Tua are the most by a Miami Dolphins QB in the first half of a game since at least 2000.
  • That’s back-to-back weeks with an interception for Xavien Howard. He has 26 of them since 2017 – the most in the NFL.
