Miami Dolphins Defensive Backs

The Miami Dolphins enter the 2021 NFL season with one of the most experienced and talented defensive backfields in the NFL. The franchise has an extensive amount of depth that stretches far beyond the big-name starters. Former Miami Dolphin Gerald Alexander will enter his second season as the team’s defensive backs coach.

Howard-Jones Tandem

For the first time since the team’s legendary Surtain-Madison duo, the Dolphins have two Pro-Bowl cornerbacks. Xavien Howard reached his second Pro-Bowl in 2020, while also leading the league in interceptions for the second time. Howard was also more active in defending the run game, tallying a career-high of 51 tackles. While PFF ranked Howard as the league’s second best corner, Byron Jones also cracked the top 10. Widely regarded as a shut-down corner, the ball is rarely thrown in Jones’ direction. Jones reached a career-high in interceptions last year, although he only hauled in two.

Talent In Center Field

Free-Safety Jason McCourty is entering his 13th NFL season, and first year with the Miami Dolphins. As a former Super Bowl Champion and Captain of the New England Patriots, McCourty is very familiar with Flores’ coaching style.

Miami also elected to choose safety Jevon Holland in the second round of the 2021 draft. Holland served as a starter in both of his years at Oregon, leading the team in interceptions each year. Although Holland opted out of the 2020 season, he posted an impressive 66 tackles in 2019.

Second Year Improvement

The Dolphins hope for an impressive season from former first-round pick Noah Igbinoghene. The Auburn product showed flashes at times, but appeared to be uncomfortable in certain coverages. With a full training camp under his belt, expect a solid rebound season.
