Xavien Howard Adds Fuel to the Fire By Requesting Trade

Dolphins CB Xavien Howard Requests Trade

Miami Dolphins star cornerback Xavien Howard has demanded a trade, per reports.

Howard, who signed a five-year, $75 million deal in 2019, is coming off arguably the best season in his career. The 28-year old CB racked in ten interceptions (most for any player in nearly 15 years) and earned All-Pro honors in 2020.

“I’m one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and the tape backs up that claim,” Howard said. “Yet, I’m the second highest paid cornerback on my own team, and it’s not even close.”

Howard later reinforced the point that his contract value fell short of that of Byron Jones. Miami’s other big name CB reportedly earned $16.5 million on average compared to Howard’s $15.05 million.

Jones holds the fifth-highest salary for his position, whereas Howard finishes in sixth.

“In 2018, I signed an extension that I’ll admit I didn’t completely understand or feel comfortable with,” Howard said on Instagram. “I’ve played on that deal for two seasons and didn’t complain, but everyone knows I’ve significantly outperformed that deal.”

What’s Next for Howard?

While Howard did show up to the first day of training camp, he made clear his true intention was to avoid the daily fine of $50,000.

The Dolphins now have the decision of coming to an agreement with the top CB or striking a trade with an interested suitor.
