Honeywell’s Long-Awaited Debut is Spoiled by Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays couldn’t complete the sweep on Sunday against the New York Yankees. In a close game, the Yankees rallied in the 10th inning, scoring four runs late as the Rays couldn’t respond.

Rays starter Brent Honeywell Jr. enjoyed a great debut as he pitched two innings, allowing no hits and adding two strikeouts. Honeywell has been out for 1,300 days since last pitching in Triple A, totaling to about three years and a half away from baseball. He has had to overcome four arm surgeries along his journey to the big leagues. But, he certainly loved being back out there playing baseball again with his teammates.

Can Honeywell Jr. Replace Blake Snell?

Rays' Brent Honeywell makes impressive first start

The loss of Blake Snell is a tough one for the Rays to manage and somebody will need to step up in his absence. Tyler Glasnow is at the top of the pitching rotation for Tampa Bay, but there is still a hole to fill. Kevin Cash has had his ways about getting pitchers involved and he’s shown that he relies on his bullpen in many situations of the game. For Honeywell, if he continues to shine like he did on Sunday, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more of him for a longer duration of the game. He may be what the Rays are looking for.

What’s Next?

Tyler Glasnow will take on Dane Dunning as the Rays look to beat the Texas Rangers at Tropicana Field on Monday.
