Jaguars Make More Moves as Free Agency Picks Up Steam

You know the drill. Another day of free agency, another set of deals for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The front office in Duval County wasted no time pouncing on more free agents, as the team continued to spend its cap space through Wednesday evening. With the immense talent coming in on all sides of the football, it sure looks like the Jags will be practically unrecognizable next year. Of course, increased talent does not always carry over chemistry-wise, but it’s always fun to speculate.

James O’Shaughnessy, TE

The Jaguars re-signed tight end James O’Shaughnessy to a new deal with unknown terms. In 2020, O’Shaughnessy served as the backup TE to Tyler Eifert, reeling in 28 receptions for 262 yards and twelve touchdowns on 38 targets. The season qualified as the best of his career, as he never managed to get his feet off his ground in Kansas City. With Eifert most likely heading for free agency, expect O’Shaughnessy to play as the No. 2 TE behind newly signed free agent Chris Manhertz.

Aldrick Rosas, PK

Placekicker Aldrick Rosas re-signed with the Jaguars on an unknown deal. Rosas, who filled in for an injured Josh Lambo last season, tallied 8 field goals on 11 attempts in 2020. The 26-year-old went 3 for 5 on 50+ yard field goals and a perfect 9 for 9 on extra point tries. Although Rosas’s stats hold up pretty well, he will in all likelihood miss the final cut for the 2021 season, as Josh Lambo should make a full recovery.

Jaguars-Ravens Trade

On Wednesday, the Jaguars agreed to trade away TE Josh Oliver to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a conditional 2022 seventh-round pick. The former third-round pick for the Jaguars proved to make little difference within the organization, as he faced multiple injuries during his time in Duval County. But sadly, Oliver would go on to only play four games in his entire tenure with the Jaguars, reeling in three catches on six targets for 15 yards in that time span. Considering Manhertz and O’Shaughnessy recently signed with the team, it truly makes perfect sense as to why the Jaguars would make such a deal. As for the conditional pick, Jacksonville will need Oliver to make the Ravens 2021 roster if they wish to receive the seventh-round pick.

Future

NFL rumors: Jaguars taking trade calls for quarterback Gardner Minshew | Should Eagles be interested? - nj.com

Per Over the Cap, the Jaguars still have $47 million in cap space and have the potential to make a few splash signings. CB Brian Poole can be a fit, alongside Alejandro Villanueva and Melvin Ingram. The Jaguars can also acquire some players or draft picks in a trade that would include Gardner Minshew. According to Ian Rapoport, the Jaguars have already received some calls from teams inquiring about the quarterback. The only two quarterbacks currently on the team’s roster are Minshew and Luton, with Trevor Lawrence likely to come. In all, the Jaguars have plenty of time to figure out what to do with Minshew, but don’t be surprised to see a deal at some point this offseason. But only time will tell what happens with Minshew and the rest of Free Agency for the Jags.
