SEC Championship Recap: Alabama vs. Florida

Another phenomenal edition of the SEC championship game resulted in the Alabama Crimson Tide walking out with the SEC title. It was an absolute classic from Alabama and Florida.

1st Half

One thing took place that we all saw coming in the first half, and that was points scored early and often. Alabama quickly started off the scoring capping off their first drive with a Najee Harris 8-yard touchdown run.

However, Florida answered back with a 51-yard passing connection to Kadarius Toney for a touchdown. After the first quarter, Alabama had established a 14-10 lead.

Most of the whole second quarter was all Crimson Tide. Harris recorded a pair of back to back touchdown receptions to begin the second quarter. With 1:06 left in the 1st half, Florida punched one in off a 1-yard Kyle Trask touchdown run.

Nick Saban’s offense put up a quick answer with a minute drive ending with another Najee Harris touchdown reception to close out the half.

Alabama running back Najee Harris was the story of the first half recording 4 total touchdowns. The Crimson Tide went into the half up 35-17 over the Gators.

2nd Half

The second half was a lot like the first half, with lots of back and forth scoring. This time however it was the Gator’s turn to start the scoring off. Florida cut the lead to 11 with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Trask to Trevon Grimes.

Right before the third quarter came to a close, Florida’s Nay’quan Wright ran one in from 3 yards out. The Gators put up 14 in the third quarter, while Alabama didn’t see any points. The Gators were putting up a fight, closing the score to 35-31 Alabama at the end of the third.

Being up only 4, Alabama added to their lead with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Najee Harris. The Crimson Tide then stole a possession from Florida off a Kyle Trask fumble forced by Will Anderson Jr. This set Alabama up for a field goal to put them ahead 45-31.

However, this game was far from over. With 6:33 left Florida cut the lead in half off a 1-yard Dameon Pierce rushing touchdown.

Heisman hopeful Devonta Smith had different plans though, he found the endzone with 4:59 left to put Alabama up 52-38. With this touchdown, the SEC championship game is Alabama’s third consecutive game scoring 50+ points.

As time was winding down and Florida being down two touchdowns, Florida needed a score. That’s exactly what they got with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts. They got the 2-point conversion making it 52-46. Florida then failed to recover a much needed onside kick closing out the game.
