Orlando Magic Fire Jamahl Mosley After 3-1 Series Choke

The Orlando Magic fired head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday after his team blew a 3-1 lead over the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Mosley ends his five-year tenure in Orlando with a 189-221 regular season record and a 7-11 postseason record.

“We’re grateful to Jamahl (Mosley) for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” Orlando Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman said in a press release Monday morning. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family nothing but the best.”

Mosley’s time in Orlando had its ups and downs, with the franchise making the playoffs in his final three years as head coach. However, his teams have underperformed once making it to the postseason and he failed to coach the Magic to their first playoff series victory since 2010.

“It’s been an absolutely amazing journey with these guys,” Mosley said after the Game 7 defeat. “Their ability to grow, communicate, and that’s what we’ve been. We’re going to be a together team, we’re going to communicate to each other, we’re gonna fight til the final horn goes off. That’s what you’ve seen for the majority of the five years.”

In the 2023-24 playoffs, the Magic held an 18-point lead in Game 7 vs J.B. Bickerstaff and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Orlando proceeded to only score 15 in the third quarter, and despite 38 points from Paolo Banchero, the Magic lost the series on the road.

In the 2025-26 playoffs, Orlando held a 3-1 series lead and a 22-point halftime lead in Game 6 vs J.B. Bickerstaff and the Detroit Pistons. The Magic scored 19 points in the second half, including 23-straight missed field goals, leading to defeat. In Game 7, Banchero once again scored 38 points and accounted for half of the team’s points through three quarters. Much like the prior Game 7 under Mosley, the Magic had a 15-point third quarter and lost on the road.

Mosley’s dismissal means the Magic will be looking for their 16th head coach in franchise history and their seventh in 11 years. With top candidates Mike Malone and Taylor Jenkins already hired for different positions, Orlando is in a difficult position heading into the offseason.

“It starts in the summer,” Banchero said after the Game 7 loss. “It’s about winning habits and creating a winning environment every single day from September to now. We gotta be better, and that doesn’t start in April when the playoffs start. You create an environment where losing isn’t acceptable, losing in the first round is not acceptable; it’s not good enough. That should be the attitude; it shouldn’t be comfortable in the building. This result is not good enough, so I think that’s just the mindset that needs to be there from top to bottom.”
